A day at the races

After many years sat behind the screen. I’ve been making a conscious effort recently, to actually get out and enjoy some of the hard earned. But also I’ve been keen to experience first hand some of the sporting venues I’ve traded.

This was another year when I declined an invite to the Cheltenham Festival, but I made up for it yesterday by attending the racing there. Judging by the weather I picked the right day! I was quite keen to see the new Grandstand and other facilities and, based on my knowledge of the old facilities, this will be a significant advancement for Cheltenham. I’ve been to Ascot a fair few times and the new facilities give Cheltenham a similar feel to Ascot, though not as substantial. I took a picture from the curved rail than overlooks the paddock area.

The view from the owners and trainers area was impressive and gave a great view of the sweeping course which is massive compared to many others I have attended. I’ve always wanted to have a look at the cross country course to figure out why so many horse take the wrong turn! The view from the Grandstands at Cheltenham are very scenic. We drove in over the hills to get a better view of the vista from the other side thanks to some local knowledge.

I had a really good day and even managed at 20/1 winner. It was tough to place a bet, rather than trade something and of course my betting success was down to pure luck. I was fortune enough to be given access to all areas of the venue, from the stables, through the paddock up to the Cheltenham club on the top floor of the new Grandstand! Eventually we settled in for a few drinks towards the end of the card with Jonjo O’Neill who was having his birthday. Thanks to several owners it was by far the most ‘active’ part of the dining area, it’s was a good laugh.

I took some pictures in and around the course and with various people, but I think the following one sums up the tail end of the day the best! Given such an enjoyable day, I think a visit during the Festival may be on the cards next year.
