The Flat is back

The Flat is back

Tomorrow marks the traditional return of the flat turf season at Doncaster.

The end of the footy season is nearing, the Grand National is right upon us and the first Golf Major of the year is almost here. It’s a period of transition.

Transition

At this time of year, we move from the National Hunt season to the Flat season proper. This marks the return of flat racing over the green stuff and that may bring out new horses or …

Flat packed

Flat packed

Nice to see some flat turf racing underway and the weather improving. Things will get busier from here. In April the flat turf season really starts to kick in and the other meeting types decline, see the graphic.

Aintree was the last chance of a decent total from a jumps meeting and it did oblige but in a grudging manner. I found Aintree much harder than in previous years, but that could have just been me. Markets shift subtly over …

Getting a little jumpy

Getting a little jumpy

It’s that time of year when the flat turf season yields to the jumps.

You often find the markets and underlying results go a bit wonky at this time. Things don’t act the same way as normal and markets shift a bit, I have mentioned this in previous years.

You tend to find, feature races being the exception of course, that the flat turf races tail off and it’s too early for form lines to be properly assessed on the …

Flat pack

Flat pack

Looking forward to the return of the flat turf season today with the Lincoln at Doncaster. 22 horses line up to battle out this competitive handicap.

We should rejoice at the return of the flat turf season. It’s return will herald less clashing and generally bigger fields. In the winter it can be a right pain when you have many cards and all the races and are falling all over each other. This will mean you should see better opportunities …

Guineas

Guineas

I had a fantastic result on the Guineas last year, when just about everything fell into place nicely. This year already looks a bit tougher so I can’t assure myself of a similar result, but will try my best to make something happen. The much vaunted ‘Frankel’ is currently trading at 1.59 which should generate a lot of volume today, but whether it does much else is another question! I’ll be reviewing the Guineas trade, amongst others, in my next

Jockey title opportunties

Jockey title opportunties

Another close Jockey championship draws to a close this weekend and it’s going to the wire by the look of it.

The battle is throwing up some interesting trading opporunties as people start to discount the prospect of a jockey change bringing a change of fortune for individual horses. Certainly there is a big incentive to win races that may have been over looked earlier in the season. Keep your eyes open for racing with either of the …

The aching transition

The aching transition

It’s that time of year in horse racing where the flat gives way to the jumps.

Some good flat races left, but a lot of lower quality and end of season stuff too. On the other side, the jumps now also have a number of novice races. So you end up with some really thin betting markets around at this time of year and things get tougher. However, it’s not new it’s been the same for years, it just a …

Start of season, end of season

Start of season, end of season

As you are probably aware from my posts, there is nothing more I like that a football match with a strong incentive behind it. At the start of a season, form is difficult to spot early on. Though promotion and relegation isnt’ so tricky. But it’s the end of the season when things really begin to happen. With many matches classed as ‘six pointers’ for one reason or another, this time of year has always been a fertile hunting ground. …
