The distorting impact of XM on Tennis

The distorting impact of XM on Tennis

I was trying to think of a better headline, but that will have to do!

XM means ‘cross matching’ and while I was trading some of the activity in the pre-off markets this evening on the US Open Tennis men’s final I switched it on and off to have a look underneath the main market. Cross matching is the complicated, in most cases unnecessary, process that Betfair uses to offer bets on both sides of the market. On Tennis, being

Champions League Final: Juventus v Barcelona (Sat, 19:45)

Saturday evening in Berlin will see what is undoubtedly the showpiece event of this year’s football calendar as Barcelona and Juventus clash having disposed of Bayern Munich and Real Madrid between them in Europe and dominated their respective domestic leagues. Indeed, the aforementioned

First off, kudos to Football Form Labs for picking the winner of the World Cup. But hold your horses the match hasn’t started yet? Well it doesn’t matter because they nominated both Argentina and Germany, boom! Well done. So here are their thoughts on the final

Much like when these sides met …

FA Cup Fi-nil, Some interesting statistics

FA Cup Fi-nil, Some interesting statistics

So the FA Cup final is upon us and, rather predictably, the final has delivered us two premiership teams. But what will the match deliver, is that going to be as predictable as well? I’ve delved back over a number of years to see if I can unlock some prevailing trends.

At first hand you can see that the final looks uncompetitive, Arsenal are heavy favourites to lift the cup. But as history has shown us, the FA Cup is …

Predicting the winner of the US Open

Predicting the winner of the US Open

It’s not just the players that are complaining about the scheduling of the US Open Tennis. I can’t trade the final tonight as it’s my wedding anniversary today. I’ve been married even longer than I’ve been on Betfair, but one benefit of that is  the next generation of traders is following just behind me!

I saw this interesting BBC article this morning and it talks about the data collection that IBM do as part of their deal to these tournaments: …

High expectations

High expectations

Expectations are high for today’s men final and I think for once I’ll just watch and enjoy it, though I will gather data. It’s been a very busy two weeks at Wimbledon and it’s throwing off above average trading characteristics, so time for a well deserved rest.

I watched last years final from Silverstone but this year the diary has lined up a bit better, but I may end up watching it at the beach because the weather is so

Key turning points in a Tennis match

Key turning points in a Tennis match

When trading you want to look for key moments to trade in and out. Sometimes these can be arbitrary, a goal up, a goal down, certain times. A set up, a break up etc. etc.

Today I saw a turning point in the Australian Open final that I hadn’t witnessed before and one that I had.

I’ve mentioned before about how players are keen to get opponents out of the zone where possible, but today this happened in an unusual …

Azarenka vs Li Na

Azarenka vs Li Na

Well that was an interesting final, not quite what I expected and a lot of it revolved around Li Na’s ankles.

Detailed below you can see the profit profile for Azarenka. This is basically telling you what would have happened if you backed Azarenka at the start. Above the line means you would have profited by backing Azarenka or laying her opponent. Below the line means the opposite.

In total, excluding brief periods above and below it flipped six times …

Rain stops play, starts trade

Rain stops play, starts trade

After a generally uncompetitive end to the women’s Tennis at the French Open I was looking forward to a decent final in the men’s. Fresh from the Aussie open blockbuster I had hoped we could see some very competitive action, not forgoing Nadal’s dominance on clay.

The first set was a bit of a mish mash with five breaks in seven games before Nadal went on to go two sets up. Djokovic needed some something to turn it around and …

Has the FA Cup lost its appeal?

Has the FA Cup lost its appeal?

Took some time out last Saturday to trade the FA CUP final pre-off. I was expecting a vibrant, lively market but ended up with the opposite and traded out for a small loss. The racing was yielding much more.

I was surprised at how little matched bet turnover there was. At the start of the FA CUP final there was matched bet volume of £3,533,632. On Tuesday night the same teams met again in the premier league and the matched …

Well done Djokovic

Well done Djokovic

Well played and and excellent job so far this year. A remarkable season so far, I wonder what heights he will reach this year?

I managed to call the final just right as it was easy to read and conformed to most entry and exit points. Wimbledon has been great this year. It’s probably the best tournament I have traded in terms of results and very few mistakes. This is rare, as you expect a few howlers through a grand …

Wimbledon 2004

Wimbledon 2004

I’ll never forget the Womans final of 2004 when Sharapova defeated defending champion Serena Williams. It was really the first big win I had on Tennis, which I had traded infrequently up to that point, so it was a bit of a watershed moment. Would be nice to get a result like that today but I’m not going to bet on it! Should be an interesting final though. Kvitova was tipped up to me early on in the tournament but …

A bit of a messicre!

A bit of a messicre!

Fairly early on last night, apart form the opening exchanges, you could see this match wasn’t going Man Utd’s way last night. The stats said it all. Possession was heavily skewed to Barca and by the end of the match Barca had 13 shots on target to Man Utd’s 1! Over 2.5 goals looked almost certain by half time, as did the Barca win. Barcelona really cemented their status as best club in Europe last night and probably the world.…

Champions League

Champions League

Everybody else will be posting about it so I thought I would add my two penneth worth.

An intriguing clash, for once I think I will watch this than trade it.

A neutral venue but Man Utd will practically be at home, so you would have to favour Barca but discount some of the neutrality. I think this is the weakest Man Utd team for a while. Other teams really should have put in a stronger challenge for the premier …

FA CUP final

FA CUP final

Is it just me or does the FA Cup feel like it’s losing is significance? Maybe it’s the dominance by big teams, maybe it’s the fact that this season the premiership and the champions league have pushed it around a little? Anyhow that’s not to detract too much from this famous competition. I am sure either supporters will be rightly proud if their team pull of a win.

The market is pricing in 2.50 goals with an advantage of 0.50 …

Going Dutch

Going Dutch

This isn’t a pick! I think the Spanish have done a good job so far tactically and may test the Dutch defence in a way it hasn’t been tested so far this World Cup. This is a reference to what I will be aiming to do this afternoon. I have Dutchand German friends just round the corner from where I live, but as the German’s didn’t get to the final I will be going Dutch for the final. As I …

Europa league final

Europa league final

Who would put it past Fulham to end the season in glory tonight? Shakhtar Donetsk, Juventus and Hamburg have all been beaten by Fulham en route to the final, with just Atletico Madrid now standing in their way.

The match itself is priced for a low scoring affair with a slight edge to Athletico. The market is pricing in a paltry 2.40 goals, which means the draw should be a likely result for 90mins. I predict if you played this …
