High expectations

Expectations are high for today’s men final and I think for once I’ll just watch and enjoy it, though I will gather data. It’s been a very busy two weeks at Wimbledon and it’s throwing off above average trading characteristics, so time for a well deserved rest.

I watched last years final from Silverstone but this year the diary has lined up a bit better, but I may end up watching it at the beach because the weather is so great. I’m going to shift locations, thank you modern technology!

There are plus points to both players on the match. Obviously a home crowd could give Murray a boost, so that is a big plus for Murray. He also outranks Djokovic in the rankings on grass and beat him here during the Olympics. But Djokovic has looked impervious in the run up to the final. Even in his classic semi final match it was more a case of Del Potro pulling something out of the hat at the critical moment to stay in it.

The head to heads are interesting reading. Djokovic leads 11 to 7 on all surfaces, 7 to 6 on hard, 2 to 0 on clay but has lost the only match they played on grass. They have played eight finals together and share four each. Djokovic is ahead 4 to 2 in semi finals. Murray leads 6 to 4 on tie breaks. If you look at their last ten matches it’s 6-4 to Djokovic but of course there are two grand slam finals in there, one a piece! All Murray’s wins have come from starting odds not dissimilar to today’s, so I don’t think you can read much into that. Matches that start in this range of odds at this stage of a tournament tend to produce favourable trading characteristics. I.e. there will be movement. If I was trading it, I would have to wait to see how gets close to the first break before opening a position.

And finally a little oddity for you in terms of similarity. Both were born on the same day, one week apart!

It’s really hard to separate them, but you would think that Murray would have a fair chance of the title; but it won’t be easy. Brace yourself for a tension filled end to Wimbledon!
