Time to book your Betfair holiday

Time to book your Betfair holiday

For the larger commission payers amongst you, this is a reminder to make sure you examine whether its worth booking your Betfair holiday before Sunday for the next week or two

When you generate commission you get credited with Betfair points. The more points you have the lower commission you pay. But each week Betfair decay a big chunk of your points which you would then top up with more activity.

Next week is a short week, especially if you …

Betfair Australia to focus on exchange business

Betfair Australia to focus on exchange business

Many thanks to posted on this thread on the forum for pointing out the news that is coming from Australia.

Basically Betfair sold their operations to Crown and Crown has done a deal to split off the Sportsbook business to BetEasy and retain the Exchange as a brand in its own right and to allow that to gain it’s own focus. It’s a complete volta-face from the situation in the Uk and is worth watching. You couldn’t have two more …

Is NBA the new WTA?

Is NBA the new WTA?

During my recent travels in the US I sat down at a bar one evening and watched some Basketball. It was an entertaining experience. Fellow bar attendees proffered their opinion and curiosity overwhelmed me, so I reached into my pocket fired up the Betfair app and had a look at the market.

Here is something you may not know.  You CAN’T actually log in and place a bet from the US, but you CAN actively look up a market and …

How Betfair’s new API is an opportunity

How Betfair’s new API is an opportunity

Nobody seems to like change, but I’ve learnt over many years that change tends to bring opportunity along with it. Change is a fact of life and therefore opportunity is too!

API NG

Just over a year ago Betfair announced the cut off date for API 6 and the switch over took place in early November this year. When Bet Angel was first developed there wasn’t even an API, the fact the old API was called API 6 tells you …

Betfair US – California HQ

Betfair US – California HQ

As you know I’m in la la land at the moment and it’s not the first time I’ve been here. Having worked for a couple of US companies in my time and thanks to my interest in Warren Buffet et al, I’ve often popped over here to do something or another most years since the early 90’s.

When Betfair started taking off in the UK I was quite interested in seeing how legislation would play out over here. To give …

Betfair to broaden cross matching in football markets

Betfair to broaden cross matching in football markets

I’ve been aware for some time, but now it’s official; Betfair are widening the cross matching net to crossover into related markets.

What exactly does this mean?

Betfair have coined the development ‘Cross market liquidity pooling’ and it’s taking place on football. It’s not due till November and will roll out if everything goes ok.

The bottom line is if you place a bet in one market it will appear in another and vice versa. This will have the effect …

Betfair exits Australia, but doesn’t

Betfair exits Australia, but doesn’t

After months of speculation and a ducked question on the last conference call, Betfair confirmed this morning that they have exited Australia, but not entirely.

In a press release issued first thing this morning Betfair stated: –

BETFAIR GROUP PLC (“Betfair”) today announces that it has sold its 50% stake in Betfair Australasia Pty Limited (“Betfair Australia”) to joint-venture partner Crown Resorts Limited (“Crown”, ASX: CWN).

Betfair has concurrently entered into an agreement with Crown to continue to provide its

Did Betfair have a good World Cup?

Did Betfair have a good World Cup?

Now the fuss has died down and the rioting taken place, it’s time to reflect on the World Cup.

From a footy perspective it was great. Much more entertaining than the previous world cups and plenty of talking points. England somehow managed to surpass even their supporters low expectations.

I managed to do a record amount on the World Cup, but that’s surprising as I spent most of last footy season carefully pulling together a number of things to deploy …

Automating your activity with Bet Angel

Automating your activity with Bet Angel

Bet Angel automation is quite simple. When you first fire it up though, you may not thing this but lets look at why a complicated looking interface is easy to understand once you look at each section in turn rather than as a whole.

Rules files

Firstly, let’s have an overview of the terminology. In Bet Angel we call the automation instructions ‘Rules’. These ‘Rules’ simply tell Bet Angel what to do and when to do it. You can …

The Oaks – Betfair’s first ever market

The Oaks – Betfair’s first ever market

So today we reach the Oaks and tomorrow the Derby, when the summer racing really starts to step  up a gear. The start of June means Royal Ascot is just around the corner.

If you are a Betfair newbie you may not know that the Oaks at Epsom was Betfair’s first market way back when they started in June 2000. But it was a little later that year, on June 11th. Mark Davis reminisced on his blog about it. I …

Trading Golf markets on Betfair

Trading Golf markets on Betfair

If you want detailed Golf stats check out this site which I have been using to dissect Golf tournaments in more detail.

My first ever bet on Betfair back in June 2000 was actually on Golf, curiously. But back then it wasn’t a trading strategy that made me place that bet. Years later, Golf is now a regular part of my trading mix and the US Masters is my first chance of the year to really go for it.

I’ve …

Betfair re-launch in Italy (Sort of)

Betfair re-launch in Italy (Sort of)

Betfair trumpeted the launch of the Italian exchange this morning. But they were the only ones celebrating as the markets in Italy resembled something of a ghost town and liquidity a piece of tumble weed blowing through it. A stark comparison to the betfair.com markets (see below).

Legislation permits that the exchange only be populated with Italian customers. So Betfair have closed all betfair.com accounts and moved them them to the ‘ringfenced’ Italian exchange. But I’d imagine most large …

Questions appear over Betfair Australia

Questions appear over Betfair Australia

Discussions are ongoing on the Bet Angel forum around speculation that Betfair may exit Australia: –

https://www.betangel.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=9077

It would be a real blow to Betfair IMHO if they did consider exiting this territory. At their IPO it seemed like they were ready to take on the world and I distinctly remember part of the pitch being that being a listed company would give them more credibility in new territories. But instead, France, Germany, Spain, Greece, Italy etc. etc. etc. etc. …

What you can do with a £10 stake?

What you can do with a £10 stake?

I’ve done this experiment a few times on the blog where I use a £10 stake and do something with it. Last week, with Cheltenham looming upon us, it’s well know that the Cheltenham markets will be well and truly stuffed up with money. That can be tough and it’s likely you will need more money to make some this week. So I thought it would be a nice reflection to trade with small amounts again as a demonstration and …

Key points from Betfair results

Key points from Betfair results

Top line numbers

  • Revenue up 5%. Underlying earnings growth is difficult to asses because of previous adjustments, so I wont attempt to interpret that.
  • Underlying exchange revenue was +1%, but bear in mind there have been a range of price rises so this hints at declining underlying business. The sportsbook has gained £2m in revenue over the past year, the exchange £400k and Betfair US is up £2m, still quite small in the scheme of things but growing much faster.

Betfair reduce in-play delay on football

Betfair reduce in-play delay on football

Received an email from Betfair today that details a plan to reduce inplay delays.

Currently they put a bet placement delay in of 8 seconds when placing a bet in play on football / soccer. They are looking to reduce the delay to 5 seconds in matches this weekend. They also plan to reduce the half time bet placement delay to one second.

See the forum for more details

Top benefits of using a VPS to trade

Top benefits of using a VPS to trade

[Forward by Peter]

I first used a VPS back in 2004. I had to travel abroad and I wasn’t sure what the internet connection was like, or if using Betfair from abroad would even be viable. So I took the plunge and started using a VPS. The idea, get a fast and reliable connection to Bet Angel and Betfair where ever I am. I’ve been using one ever since! But what is a VPS and would it be useful to

Betfair link Sportsbook to the exchange

Betfair link Sportsbook to the exchange

In a positive move for exchange liquidity Betfair have finally linked up the Sportsbook front end to the exchange mechanism.

In only appears to be on Football markets at the moment but no doubt more markets will follow. As it now stands anybody placing a bet on the Sportsbook will automatically see their bet ‘referred’ to the exchange. If the exchange price (less 5% commission) is better than the sports book price, then the bet is placed via the exchange …

£17k

£17k

After I posted up my summary of 2013, I realised there was another statistic I could have added to the mix. Commission paid. I used a number of strategies last year. Including some experimental ones and that meant that the most I paid over a four week total in commission last year was a staggering £17,697.

To clarify that’s commission generated, not profit. Eye watering stuff. I hadn’t realised just how much until I ran over the stats! Just wanted …

For this automation strategy we will look at backing or laying the draw. We want to automatically place a bet just before kick-off then exit the trade …

Betfair ‘ask the MD session’

In case you were not aware Betfair are holding a ‘Ask the MD’ session this week. It’s a great opportunity to ask Betfair’s senior management about any burning issues you have.

There is often a lot of debate on various forums and social media about Betfair’s strategy and what they are doing and why so this event this week presents you with the opportunity to ask those questions directly to Betfair and to carefully digest the resulting explanations. Too good …

Santa delivers early xmas present

No I haven’t finally got a Christmas card from Betfair, just a catch up on events at Santa Anita a couple of weeks ago.

I’ve had an on off relationship with the breeders cup over the years but this year turned out to be quite good in the scheme of things. It was marked by good and bad races but the good ones produced something and the bad ones didn’t really lose much. So I’d rank 2013 as one of …

Ladbrokes ready exchange for launch

Activity picking up on Ladbrokes on what appears to be a launch, ahead of schedule, of the exchange that was touted at their results as I documented a little while ago.

Well, you may or not know, that Betdaq is actually intertwined with the ‘Global betting exchange’. The concept being …

Betfair set to launch in New Jersey

Betfair appear to be readying for a launch in New Jersey, but unfortunately it’s just casino and gaming. Hardly ground breaking stuff. But interesting nonetheless.

The choice of imagery just above the subscription form is interesting. A London backdrop?

Anyhow, I’ll keep you updated when things mature a bit.

Original Betfair investor cashes out

News today that Balderton Capital ‘cashed out’ it’s remaining investment in Betfair.

An RNS notice appeared today showing that Balderton had sold 4,227,170 shares bringing their holding from 4.04% to 0%.

The significance of this is that Balderton were one of the original investors. To quote their website: –

“Balderton’s original investment in Betfair was made in 2000 and it remains one of the largest institutional shareholders post the listing. The partners have been actively involved in the development

Bert sells more Betfair shares

Bert sells more Betfair shares

With Betfair shares now approaching £10.55, seemingly a bit ahead of current events. Andrew Black, founder of Betfair, sold another tranche of shares yesterday. The sale amounted to 600k of shares somewhere over £6m in total. This sales leaves Bert with just over 4m shares down from 10.5m back on 14th November 2011. So Bert has reduced his holding by over 60% in less than two years.

Shares hit a low of £6.50 this year before running up on a …
