French Open Tennis – Roland Garros

French Open Tennis – Roland Garros

Today see’s the start of the 4th Round of the Roland Garros and its certainly been an eventful first week to say the least.

On day one the women’s world number 1 Angelique Kerber was dumped out 6-2, 6-2 making her the only number one seed ever to be eliminated in the first round of the French Open – there has only ever been four number ones who have gone out in the first round across all Grand Slams.…

French open tennis – When it’s good to see red!

French open tennis – When it’s good to see red!

It’s great to see the start of the French open tennis and it’s one of those moments when the red clay surface will often mean green for traders.

Grand Slams often produce good matches and the slower surface at Roland Garros will bring shot making and athleticism to the fore.

Early rounds of grand slams often bring up very shot prices, but the odd shock. So I’m generally looking to oppose red hot favourites in the early rounds hoping for …

Short priced Tennis finals

Short priced Tennis finals

We’ve reached the closing stages of the French Open and have ended up with two short priced favourites for both finals. One is the function of the seeding and draw, the other through form.

Of the two matches the women’s final looks to hold more potential, if Sharapova can come up with a game plan to unsettle Williams. In Tennis the most common tactic is to come out all guns blazing and try and get a quick break in the …

Finals day at Roland Garros

Finals day at Roland Garros

Ha, it’s obviously not, but it may well as be. The match of the men’s tournament is upon us and deserves a lot of attention today. Nadal has ended up playing Djokovic in the semis thanks to his 3rd seed status, but it’s a match befitting the final.

On the other side of the draw Tsonga is the big benefactor of Rafa’s seeding and has an intriguing match against Ferrer.

Here are some stats for the Djokovic vs Nadal match, …

Doing a back flip

Doing a back flip

The quarters are on us in the French Open Tennis and at first sight they look uncompetitive. The favourites are very short against their opponents. But when trading you are not that interested in how short a price something is, more where it can do.

So on short priced Tennis matches I’ll often try and do a ‘back flip’. I’ll happily back the outsider on the basis that if the short priced favourite doesn’t grab the match by the scruff …

History made at the French Open

History made at the French Open

The French Open is at the quarter final stage now and it’s generally been good stuff so far. Not as many major shocks as you could have wished for, but plenty of competitive swingy games. It’s generally been good trading fodder and the average range of volatility this year has been above normal. So I would imagine a lot of people have managed to pick up some decent results.

Because it’s been above average don’t get suckered into believing you …

Roland Garros on the horizon

Roland Garros on the horizon

The European clay court season is in full flow now and Rafael Nadal lifted his 40th career title on clay and 5th title this year at the Madrid Masters. On the women’s side Serena Williams successfully defended her Madrid Open title and kept her world #1 status in defeating Maria Sharapova. This was despite a massive scare in the quarter finals. We now move to Rome for the ‘International BNL d’Italia’ which will be the last  tournament before Roland Garros.…

A tale of two different tournaments

A tale of two different tournaments

You couldn’t wish for two more different tournaments in the French open this year. On the men’s side Nadal is playing consistently and has eased through to the latter stages. His opponents meanwhile have stuttered and at times looked in real trouble. If you look at the men’s draw; all this has meant that Nadal, ‘the king of clay’, has shortened from 1.72 at the start of the tournament to just 1.58. All the other top seeds have drifted.

On …

Serena Williams crashes out of French Open

Serena Williams crashes out of French Open

Low backers were handed an almightly thumping when Serena Williams crashed out of the first round of the French open this evening.

It is the first time the 2002 champion has lost in the opening round of a grand slam event. Those who read my article of last year on forecasting decline in players may have had half an eye on Williams, but few would have honestly expected defeat this early and in this manner. Most speculative short layers should …

Federer loses French Open final

Federer loses French Open final

I’ve deliberately titled this post in a manner that is completely dissimilar to the current headlines out there. Well done to Nadal winning the French open; but if you look at the flow of the match from a statistical viewpoint, it was more like Federer who actually lost it in my opinion.

It was a fairly tight match, till the last set at least, 7-5, 7-6, 5-7, 6-1. You would expect the younger player of the two to do better …

Fab Friday

Fab Friday

Today, we have a decent looking day ahead of us on the sporting front.

The Epsom derby meeting kicks off today and the Oaks is always a reminder of the first race that Betfair took bets on back in June 2000. To be honest I haven’t really ripped through this Friday for a few years. So I’ll be taking things careful until I get a feel for the day.

At the French Open the top four men in the world …

French Open Tennis

French Open Tennis

Looking forward to getting stuck into the Tennis this week, especially with the football season now behind us.

Nadal has an easier draw potentially than Djokovic so Djokovic is right up against it if he is going to maintain his amazing start to 2011.

Don’t forget to use Tennis trader to frame your upside (or downside) when trading a tennis match.

Murray vs Gasquet

Murray vs Gasquet

I know British hopefuls will be dissapointed if Murray goes at in the first round at Roland Garros. But at the current market price Murray is priced at only being a couple of percent better than Gasquet. That makes it a tough match for Murray. Nadal is at very short prices to add a fifth title.

If Murray wins the first set then expect his price to reach 1.28, if Gasquet wins Murray would drift to 2.36.

Doing a Wozniacki

Doing a Wozniacki

I am now fully prepared for the French Open tennis which starts today. Watched some Tennis last week and saw Wozniacki retire, again, through injury. As part of my preparation, I dusted off my fly swatter and started playing Tennis again. On the hottest day of year so far, I thrashed around the count waving my arms at random. It’s nice to play a sport that you want to get involved in on the markets, you often learn lots and …

Biggest shock ever?

Biggest shock ever?

This is what could happen today when Soderling steps out at Roland Garros to compete for the title of French open champion. Before the start of the tournament £1371 was traded at 1000 on Soderling. There is £1.3m riding on the outcome of this match at 1000’s.

I am all green on any winner on the final thanks in main to Nadal’s exit. Given the starting odds of Soderling it would be great if he won but spreading my profit …

Murray serves up another great trade

Murray serves up another great trade

If the Tennis carries on like this we could be in for a cracking warm up to Wimbledon. Murray again stuttered at the start of this match today, but fought back to take the first set. A weary Tipsarevic then retired after losing. Very similar scenario to the previous Murray trade. Murray is on court again today, so worth taking a look in what is likely to be a more competitive match.

In clay trading

Great news, it’s the French Open. Your last chance to practice your Tennis trading before Wimbledon. While you are having a practice take a look at Bet Angel’s Guardian feature which is perfect for Tennis training. I’ve uploaded a video here: –

Murray served up a good start trading opportunity with a roller-coaster against an opponent ranked well below him. Starting at 1.05 and out of sorts, Murray sort of stumbled through the early part of the match with …
