Open Golf – End of day one

Day one went a bit better than I expected TBH. The weather was great but we had quite a few golfers complaining about the pin set up on greens that were described as ‘Glass’. This meant the course was as tough as ever, even without the weather playing a hand. The early starters seemed to get the rub of the green and the later starters were the most vocal complainers. It would seem sensible to use that knowledge today.

Surprise of the day was Shiv Kapur who has a monster front nine only to fade on the back nine, quite a common experience. He started at 1000 and came in to 70’s before sliding down the leaderboard. £10 on Kapur would have earned you £143 if you would have traded out at his low point. McIlroy and Donald continued their poor form, Donald getting an extraordinary bounce from out of bounds to land a perfect position on the fairway. Schwartzel got so frustrated that he broke a club clean in half after an errant shot. It’s nice to the see the pros lose it now and again, I’ve experienced that a few times on a golf course.

Top trades possible from day one, back before the start to the close of play on day one, fully hedged: –

Zach Johnson – 120 to 12 £90.00
Rafael Cabrera Bello – 520 to 55 £84.55
Tom Lehman – 1000 to 140 £61.43
Mark OMeara – 1000 to 170 £48.82
Shiv Kapur – 1000 to 170 £48.82
Miguel Angel Jimenez – 240 to 46 £42.17
Francesco Molinari – 180 to 38 £37.37
Angel Cabrera – 140 to 34 £31.18
Dustin Johnson – 75 to 21 £25.71
