What’s a guinea?

02/05/2009 | By More

May brings us several highlights on the sporting calendar. The first major flat classic takes place at Newmarket, the guineas meeting. “What’s a guinea” I hear you ask? For the more curious here is the description on Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guinea_coin.

This meeting covers the full weekend so if you want to give this high profile event a go, make sure you book  both days off!! A few years ago I didn’t book time off and ended up trading the Guinea’s meeting remotely from the other side of the world, sad but true. This actually brought me one of the most treasured memories of my exchange career. You generally don’t get many chances to trade next to palm trees and a pool! This year I will be behind my usual desk, the only pool in sight is the one my fish swim in, in the garden.

May also brings us the Chester May meeting which is always interesting, but also other key sporting events. The UEFA cup final, FA cup final and Champions League final occur this month and Tennis traders get the chance to work up for Wimbledon with French Open towards the end of the month. It’s going to be a busy month.
