More Moore at Goodwood

More Moore at Goodwood

Goodwood should have been renamed Greywood at the start of the festival, such was the miserable weather that accompanied what should have been a glorious week on the Sussex downs. But it was notable for one particular day.

The weather had a huge impact on the meeting last week and produced a below par performance from me and from the markets. I’d imagine most attendees on course last week, spent most of their time hiding from the incessant rain and …

Trading ‘Good-way’

Trading ‘Good-way’

No that’s not a typo! There are two meetings that should get your attention this week.

From a trading perspective, I like multi day high-quality meetings. They usually throw up some good opportunities and are a welcome addition to any month.

Goodwood

As you may know, these higher quality meetings produce extra volume and that can change the characteristics significantly. But don’t let Goodwood fool you into thinking it’s the same as a Royal Ascot or Cheltenham, it behaves very …

An evening off?

An evening off?

The Sussex stakes at Goodwood yesterday proved to be a very interesting market. I posted all of the charts from that race on a Facebook page for you to have a look at, but I felt this was one of the most readable markets of the week so far. Most of the other racing yesterday was a little bit quiet, but Galway gives a boost in the evening.

Today we have an interesting card as Galway is running during the …

Galwood day one

Galwood day one

It was a slow but interesting start to the week at Goodwood and Galway.

The Tuesday is always a bit tricky because the racing cards are a little bit weaker on these days. As a case in point, the top races today dwarf the the whole card from yesterday at both courses.

We have a group one race at Goodwood today, the Sussex stakes, that should prove interesting trading fodder and we also have a Galway plate. Both of these …

Goodway

Goodway

So Goodwood is underway and it’s performing more or less as I expected and, hopefully, set your expectations at.

In the first two days the biggest race reached £2.2m but the lowest was waaaaaaaaaay off that. Mainly thanks to clashing with other races. Attention is very firmly focused on the feature races and that’s producing the majority of the matched bet turnover so far, helping all markets reach £16m so over the two days. But curiously it doesn’t feel like …

Gearing up for Goodwood

Gearing up for Goodwood

I’ve been having a quiet week as you can probably tell from various social media bits. After fourteen years on the markets a really busy summer requires an effort to not completely burn out so I’ve been taking it a bit easier. Also my twins turned to teenagers this week, so that’s worth celebrating. You may have noticed that I still can’t resist a rock solid opportunity however!

In the Summer it’s possible to skip some sessions as you know …

Goodwood so far

Goodwood so far

I think it has played out similar to what I imagined. People always over-hype Goodwood and as a consequence the markets often fill up with money that nobody takes.

If you look at the detail you can see this showing up in the stats. The average queue size at Goodwood is twice its normal size, but the fill rate is about normal. This adds up to taking a little more than twice as normal to fill. The longer something takes …

Sports overload!

Sports overload!

I swear if there is more sports available on TV my head is going to explode!

It seems for most of the summer I have been bouncing from one major sporting event to another and now, with the Olympics on, it’s all gone into over drive. I am definitely going to have a rest at the end of this period.

The Tennis has been by far the most tradable sport at the Olympics and we culminate with the finals this …

Goodwood day three/four

Goodwood day three/four

A day of progress yesterday.

It was steady, but nothing spectacular. It’s a nice base to build from and I have finally settled into a pattern for Goodwood festival. Hopefully I can use today and tomorrow to pick off a quality opportuntity. Goodwood has lacked a blockbuster race for me so far this week, so I’m hoping to pick off something useful. Betdaq has been comfortable for me all week so I upped stakes yesterday and got my best day …

Goodwood day two

Goodwood day two

I didn’t have high expectations for yesterday and those where met!

The Frankel market was especially hard and I had to take a loss. You win some, you lose some and yesterday I lost some on this race. But that’s normal, you can’t win them all and it’s unrealistic to expect to do so, so it’s all about the balance of the two. So I didn’t get a result here but I will almost certainly another time. Looking back I …

The most challenging race ever?

The most challenging race ever?

First day of Goodwood was quiet with nothing spectacular coming out of any of the races. I didn’t really get any stand out results from the card, just plodded along all day pulling in steady numbers. Overall a nice result on the day, but no thanks to Goodwood.

Today we have Frankel running. I think this is possibly the most uncompetitive group race I have ever seen in the UK? It’s difficult to do anything useful in a market like …

Goodwood, close but no cigar

Goodwood, close but no cigar

So Glorious Goodwood is upon us.

I used to live on the South Coast and Goodwood has always stuck in my memory as a very scenic and entertaining course to visit. Perched just north of Chichester, you can climb Knights Hill and get a great view from which to look down on the course and the wonderful surrounding countryside.

If you fancy a round of Golf, the golf club is only just around the corner and is very enjoyable and …

Gooder Goodwood

Gooder Goodwood

My old English tutor would have a heart attack with that title!

Had my best day of the week yesterday and should be headed for a great festival overall. The day didn’t start very well with a delayed start and then I got my bottom spanked at Nottingham when I failed to address an alarming drift on the horse I was trading. But from there in things just got better and better. I managed to pull in some really good …

Phone call from Betfair

Phone call from Betfair

A few weeks I got a phone call from a number I didn’t recognise. It was Betfair telling me I was now going to pay 60% of my profit to them. Or not as it turned out!

I tagged a name to that number so if they phoned again I would know who it was. Yesterday that number rang again, right in the middle of trading, thanks. What could Betfair be doing phoning me in the middle of Goodwood? Curious …

Not so Good-wood

Not so Good-wood

A fairly lacklustre day yesterday started me off on the five day festival at Goodwood. I didn’t pull anything amazing out of the hat, but ended on a decent amount for the day. I think it ‘felt’ lacklustre because I had such a good start last year. On the same day last year I managed a clean sweep of the entire card, I didn’t manage that this year.

Today promises to be very interesting. The feature race stands out a …

A Glorious week ahead

A Glorious week ahead

After some quiet weeks it’s time to roll up your sleeves and get busy again. I have traditionally done well from Goodwood so I am looking for a repeat performance this year. Nothing is guaranteed however, so I’ll roll up my trousers and dip my toe in the water today to find out how warm it is. We targeted this very meeting last year for some really in-depth research and analysis so we will be doing the same this year …

Goodwood / New football season

Goodwood / New football season

This is turning out to be a good week so far. I think the research I did last year and this has given me some confidence to know exactly what I should be doing and when, also when to not bother! I don’t think it’s been easy, but that gives me even more confidence given the fact I am making it work well.

Today is going to be very busy so I hope that I can end the week with …

Goodwood day two

Goodwood day two

First race of the day struggled to stay in profit, small profit second race and a loss in the third. My winning run broken. But with the shackles off I threw caution to the wind and actually had a pretty reasonable day. It’s been pretty mixed though, but I am doing a better job than last year. I hope to keep that up for the next three days to complete a strong month.

The confusing thing is that I am …

Positive start

Positive start

I didn’t expect Goodwood to be that easy and it wasn’t. But thanks to my preparation I did get off to a good start on the week. In fact I managed a clean sweep on all the races yesterday. Which meant, after carrying over races from Monday, I am entering today on 43 winning races in a row! While a run like that sounds great, it’s not. It just adds pressure to perform on the next race and you end …

Glorious Goodwood?

Glorious Goodwood?

Goodwood starts today and I must say that in previous years I’ve often struggled to make this a glorious week. Goodwood does not seem a lucky course for me. Last year I had to work hard to try and get things right and it took me most of the week to get it and by then it was too late. This year I am better prepared so hope to do better.

We also have the Galway summer festival this week. …

Goodwood

Sounds more like a stud farm than a racecourse!

But seriously, this should be an interesting week. I’ve had mixed results from Goodwood in the past but that’s probably a reflection on the one year I had a bit of a mare at Goodwood. Hopefully I wont see a repeat this week. Glorious Goodwood is an excellent week to learn about the markets. Over the course of the next five days you will get all manner of markets occurring from …
