A nice couple of contrasting matches yesterday.<\/p>\n

First of we had Nadal slip to a set down and 0-3 down in the second set tie break. Of course, he dug deep and pulled himself out of trouble. But you would probably be quite surprised how often favourites get into trouble at short odds. The key factor being that the opponent really has to take them game to the favourite right from the off to stand any chance of winning; so that is often what they will try. Attack their opponent from the off before they get settled and try and see it through. But, it’s rare to see one way traffic in these types of matches, unless its the favourite! It’s difficult to see much point backing at such short odds, so I’ll often offer up a lay and make a decision if I get matched.<\/p>\n

We also had the inimitable<\/em>\u00a0Mr Gael Monfils. I have mentioned Gael<\/a> before quite a few times on the blog and he is one of those real characters in the game. In front of a partisan crowd he refused to give up yesterday despite losing a two set lead and eventually dumping Thomas Berdych out of the competition at a short price, 1.10 in-play. At 2-0 up, Monfils traded down to 1.34 before the match swung back to Berdych setting up a great finale which saw Monfils close out 7-5 in the last set.<\/p>\n

It’s a nice start to a busy couple of weeks.<\/p>\n
