The European clay court season is in full flow now and Rafael Nadal lifted his 40th career title on clay and 5th title this year at the Madrid Masters. On the women’s side Serena Williams successfully defended her Madrid Open title and kept her world #1 status\u00a0in defeating Maria Sharapova. This was despite a massive scare in the quarter finals. We now move to Rome for the ‘International BNL d’Italia’ which will be the last\u00a0 tournament before Roland Garros.<\/p>\n

Nadal seems at his imperious best on clay, Murray seems lost and Serena it looks like a world #1. So in general form seems to be holding up at the moment and there are no surprises or real clues to performance at the French Open.<\/p>\n

Rome should give us a final chance to look at the contenders, but bear in mind that with the French Open on our doorstep some players may not go all out to win in the lead up tournament, or may play a little safer. Nobody will ever remember you for winning in Rome, but everybody will remember a French Open champion!<\/p>\n
