Last year I had a couple of thoughts about Formula one and motor-sport in general, so I embarked on a research project. Still a lot of work to be done and conclusions to be reached.<\/p>\n

I’m still not finished on the research and I don’t have a complete data set but one I started the research, sensibly, at the start of the season and started working through each race going back ten years or as far as I could go. I’m still not finished on all circuits. One of the early pointers I got from the data in the early races was that Melbourne had an above average rate of retirement.<\/p>\n

It was about 10% more than Malaysia and double that of China. When you dug underneath that stat you find that mechanical failure isn’t above average but accidents are. Overall 4\/10 cars retire for one reason or another at Melbourne. Thought you may like that stat ahead of the race tomorrow.<\/p>\n
